Patterns 02:32
Patterns You can put the keys in the fridge The letters in a box But you’re never gonna change The memory Of who you are You can play hide and seek Put some rocks in a fire But you’re never gonna write A poem for your father You can use the tricks you own You can have the latest phone You’ll get bored of ants and vermin in your head You can play fire and weed Still the wind will always blow The ashes in your eyes You’ve got to burn the locks first You can eat the lemonpie You can crush a fly Yet the lightness of being Is gonna get you down
2.
Gold red circles Sun comes up Sun comes up I’m waiting for moonrise Moon goes down Moon goes down I’m waiting for sunrise I want you to be nearby I want you here and now I want you here now Gold red circles In the water Bringing me peace of mind Still it would be Nice and easy To be with you again I want you to be nearby I want you here and now You to be nearby I want you here now I want you to be nearby I want you here and now You to be nearby I want you here now
3.
Chain of memory lane I couldn’t help it Saw you crossing the street again How could you look so peaceful So perfect to me My bones were bound to be broken But I’ll never let you break my bones again Seasons changed colors of hair This chain of memory lane to you Will fetter for all time Still I have high hopes That faith will beat malice again My bones were there to be broken Now I badly hope you broke your bones too Slowly Little by little You became this stranger to me
4.
It Ain’t Mine No, this city it ain’t mine I do not recognize its scent Mountain valleys many moons ago Only reveries in my mind People passing by little pinpricks on my skin I won’t toe the line I’ll put the horse before the cart Everything is moving way too fast Into forms and shapes I do not know Everything is moving way too fast Into forms and shapes I do not know anymore No, this city it ain’t mine I do not recognize its scent Down the road I will be done Riding off into the sunset People passing by little pinpricks on my skin I won’t toe the line I’ll put the horse before the cart Everything is moving way too fast Into forms and shapes I do not know Everything is moving way too fast Into forms and shapes I do not know anymore
5.
Little Shakers&Wooden Blocks Mind the lady coming down the stairs Morning sadness melts away like snowflakes in the sun Giant footprints of the father Coming home for good Raise your voice in all its might Break the silence with your words Cowardice and mediocrity are taking over nowadays Are the little shakers and the wooden blocks Nothing but a poor remedy to get you on top? Mind the lady coming down the stairs Pretty faces fade away Same pattern every day Self-fulfilling prophecies are taking over nowadays Are the little shakers and the wooden blocks Nothing but a poor remedy to get you on top?

14:48 03:25
14:48 Checking out from head to toe We’re digging dirt We’re digging dirt We won't speak of reconciliation We get in line For the alphabet soup We’re packed like sardines We’re packed like sardines It’s a dime a dozen This mortal coil You wanna go left, you wanna go right You’re digging dirt You’re digging dirt Dog eat dog in a railway station Scarlet woman in a fancy car Show us some good behavior We’re packed like sardines We’re packed like sardines This war of nerves Will get you down You gotta make it on your own You gotta make it all alone You gotta keep your head up high You gotta move You gotta prove Stand in line And leave behind Always kind Never mind You gotta make it on your own You gotta make it all alone
7.
Never come back Step out of the shadow Leave the darkness behind Forever Listen to the radio Why don’t you love me anymore Why did you let me down Why did you turn your back Why did you feed off of your doubts No I wont stay to hold on To what we have If you ever come back Step into the water Let brightness come Let lightness come Forever Listen to the summer rain Why don’t you come home now Forever Why did you let me down Why did you turn your back Why did you feed off of your doubts No I wont stay to hold on To what we have If you ever come back
8.
Moonbeams 04:30
Moonbeams A little rain is painting pictures on my window Moonbeams lightening up my bedroom, I’m awake Oh, how will I unlock this rage in me Oh, how do I reveal these wounds I feel Clock is ticking in my veins until morning light Bring me back to places where there is no pain
9.
Warriors 16:44
Warriors I fear no storm anymore, my love I fear no fight anymore I fear no soldier and no sidestep anymore I fear no dark side nor nightfall After the war we leave a barren sheet behind After the war we leave a barren sheet behind, My love It’s time for closure, we’re saviors of a lost heart It’s time for tenderness, we’re warriors of this lost cause I long for silent nights without you in my dreams I long for bits and pieces coming back to me After the war we leave a barren sheet behind, My love After the war we leave a barren sheet behind, My love

When The Antler King presented themselves to the world in 2011, the band surprised all of us with a much appraised debut album. Two years later it is time for their second album Patterns. Unmistakably The Antler King, yes, but at the same time in many aspects differing from their previous work. You could easily regard this album as The Big Leap forward, displaying the band’s perfect feel for craftsmanship and genuine emotion.
In comparison to The Antler King’s debut album, Patterns could also be considered as Esther and Maarten’s ‘musical marriage’, not a surprise since both are officially husband and wife. Whereas Maarten previously used to find a lot of fulfilment in his guitar-playing sidekick role, his part on Patterns has become more important, resulting in some mean finger picking passages, layers of odd sounds and genius synthesiser and key-finds.
Releasing Gold Red Circles as summer single proved to be a very good choice. It is a very catchy sing-along that easily finds its way to everyone’s long-term memory. A summer hit, with enough edge to fill fans with euphoric joy until the album release.
The spooky and eerie-threatening title track Patterns would really have fit beautifully on a David Lynch movie soundtrack. Patterns, yes. You will find them all over the album, symbolising the patterns of life in which you can loose yourself or get stuck. But there are also reflections on everyday life, on becoming older, and the art of how to put things in perspective. The Antler King’s craftsmanship lies in – amongst others - creating straightforward acoustic (folk)pop, floating on beautiful harmonies. Mind you, the band did not move to a far away log cabin to write introspective campfire songs. On the contrary; as a result from unexpected style-choices combined with Esther’s vocals - epic and demure, powerful and soothing - they have created quite a unique sound.
While searching the essence of Esther & Maarten The Antler King received a lot of help from producer/sound engineer Jan Chantrain. Fed by their die-hard DIY ethics they played all instruments themselves (Esther even taught herself how to play the drums), resulting in somewhat imperfect but passionate performances. With this approach The Antler King has shed the perfect polish of their songs and replaced it with extra charm and attitude. A wise choice, showing Esther & Maarten’s musical professionalism and their will to play whatever they feel. There is no hype, there is only music.
